Major Cox Plate 2011 contender Descarado has been scratched from the race this Saturday October 22, 2011, at Moonee Valley.
Descarado was suffering from swelling to his near hind leg and, despite experiencing lameness on just a one out of five level, has bee ruled unfit to run in this Saturday’s $3 million Cox Plate.
The five-year-old turned heads earlier this month when he won the Group 1 Caulfield Stakes at Caulfield Racecourse and had appeared well on track to claim his first Cox Plate title.
Racing Victoria’s chief steward Terry Bailey confirmed Descarado had been withdrawn from the field earlier today.
“The stable just advised us that they will be supplying a veterinary certificate to say that the horse isn’t fit to run on Saturday, so at least everyone knows where they are heading now,” Bailey said.
The Gai Waterhouse-trained gelding has won five of his 21 career starts, including last year’s $2.5 million Caulfield Cup.
The scratching of Descarado now makes room for first emergency Avienus to take her place in the 2011 Cox Plate field.
The six-year-old mare ironically finished second to Descarado last start in the Caulfield Stakes and will jump from barrier 12 come Saturday’s Cox Plate.
